Why is a 100-Year-Old Game Still So Popular?
Mah Jongg is over 100 years old, yet it stands the test of time. There are many reasons why it is still relevant:
It's a great mix of skill and luck. You can't control the tiles you draw, but you can control how you build your hand, when you pivot, and what you decide to discard. Luck keeps the game from becoming predictable, so you’re not simply playing against someone else’s skill level. Beginners still have a real shot at winning, which keeps games fun for mixed-experience groups.
It's social in a way few games are. A game takes four people, and the pace of some games, or taking refreshment breaks, can leave room for chatting. Many people play weekly with the same group, and it often becomes the main reason friends get together.
It’s universal. Playing American Mah Jongg by the official rules gives you the opportunity to play with anyone around the world who also plays the American version.
It keeps your brain engaged. Throughout the game, you're recognizing patterns and adjusting your strategy. As your game improves, you’re tracking discards, noticing opponents’ strategies, and identifying opportunities you would have completely missed as a beginner. It helps to improve your executive functioning skills, such as focus, working memory, and organization. That's why Mah Jongg is recognized as a mentally-stimulating hobby, especially for older adults, although it's just as fun at any age.
It’s satisfying to get better. Going from “I have no idea what these tiles mean” to spotting a promising hand feels surprisingly rewarding. The basic loop is simple: Draw a tile, discard a tile, build sets. However, there's plenty of strategy to dig into over years of play.
It has personality. The tiles, terminology, rituals, and different styles of play give it more character than a lot of modern board games.
You don’t have to be a “game person” to enjoy Mah Jongg. Whether you enjoy cards, puzzles, bingo, Scrabble, Rummikub, or simply hanging out with people while doing something, you might find Mah Jongg surprisingly addictive.
Mah Jongg is currently experiencing a wave of newfound enthusiasm and is worth trying because it hits a pretty unusual combination of strategy, socializing, and just enough luck to stay exciting. We recommend learning from an instructor who is versed and experienced with the official rules of the National Mah Jongg League to help prevent conflicts during gameplay.
